Rockies Sign Two Veteran Starting PItchers

Pitchers and catchers officially reported for Spring Training yesterday. That means baseball is basically here!

And in honor of Spring Training, the Rockies showed off their new Spring Training hats.

I don’t usually look at a hat and immediately want one, but this hat is the exception. I love the cactus next to their logo and the spring training patch on the side of the hat.

The bad news is that I can’t find it for sale anywhere. At least, not yet.

This article on KDVR has a couple more photos if anyone wants to check out their new hat.

And if anyone knows of a place they’re selling this hat, please send it my way.

Now, let’s jump into the Rockies news from this past week.

Rockies Sign Tomoyuki Sugano to a One-Year Deal

The Rockies were looking to sign some veteran pitchers this past week and their first stop was Tomoyuki Sugano.

Tomoyuki Sugano is a 36-year-old, right-handed starting pitcher.

On Tuesday, he signed a one-year deal with the Rockies for $5.1 million.

And while he’s considered a veteran pitcher, Tomoyuki Sugano has only played one season in the MLB, which was last year with the Baltimore Orioles.

Prior to the MLB, Tomoyuki Sugano pitched 12 seasons in the Nippon Professional Baseball Organization for the Yomiuri Giants.

While in the Nippon Professional Baseball Organization, his overall record was 136-74 with an ERA of 2.43 (which sounds like good numbers to me).

And then in his first MLB season, he pitched in 30 games. His record was 10-10 with an ERA of 4.64.

Hopefully, we can see some good things while he’s on the mound at Coors Field!

We can at least expect to see him be a part of the Rockies’ starting rotation.

Rockies Sign Jose Quintana to a One-Year Deal

Jose Quintana is a 37-year-old, left-handed starting pitcher. And yesterday, he agreed to a one-year deal with the Rockies for $6 million.

This will be his 15th year as a starter and we can expect to see him in the starting rotation.

Last season, Jose Quintana pitched in 24 games with the Milwaukee Brewers. In those 24 games, his record was 11-7 with an ERA of 3.96.

Overall, sounds like a solid pickup for the Rockies!

Hopefully, we can see those types of numbers this season, too.

Kris Bryant on 60-Day Injured List…Again

Is anyone shocked by this news?

Me either.

This is the start of Kris Bryant’s 5th year of his 7-year, $182 million contract.

And in the previous 4 years as a Rockies player, he’s played in 170 games total.

Kris Bryant is currently on the 60-day injured list with lumbar degenerative disk disease.

And while I can’t imagine having constant back problems like that, it’s also easy to understand why Rockies fans are frustrated with this contract.
